Why Position Sizing Is the Most Important Calculation in Trading

You can be right about direction more often than not and still lose your account if your position size is wrong. Conversely, you can be wrong half the time and grow steadily with disciplined sizing. That is why professional traders fix their risk first and let position size follow — never the other way round. This calculator does exactly that: you decide the small percentage you are willing to lose, and it tells you the largest position that keeps you within that limit.

How It Works

The formula is simple: your risk amount is your account balance times your risk percentage. Your stop distance is how far your stop-loss sits from entry, measured in pips or points. Position size is then risk amount divided by (stop distance times pip value). The calculator handles the arithmetic so you can size correctly in seconds, even under the time pressure of a kill zone.

Using It With the ICT Framework

ICT setups are built around tight, logical stops — placed just beyond a swept high or low, or beyond an order block. That tight stop is what gives ICT its strong risk-to-reward, and it is exactly what this calculator turns into a precise position size. Pair it with the OTE Calculator for your entry zone and the Risk-to-Reward Calculator to confirm the trade is worth taking.
