Three features define a valid Hangman:
1. A long rejection wick. The wick is the signal. It must clearly pierce the level and close back on the origin side — the deeper the pierce and the cleaner the close-back, the stronger.
2. A small body. The body sits at the opposite end of the wick, showing that the attempt to hold beyond the level failed almost immediately.
3. Location at a PD array. The wick must reject from a recognised array — an order block, the far edge of a fair value gap, or a breaker. A long wick in open space is noise, not a Hangman.

How and Where It Forms

The Hangman forms when price runs a pool of liquidity, taps into a PD array beyond it, and is rejected by institutional order flow. The sequence is almost always:
A liquidity sweep takes out obvious highs or lows, price extends into the PD array sitting behind that liquidity, and then a single candle prints the long rejection wick as the array does its work. This is why the Hangman appears so often at premium and discount extremes — that is where the arrays that matter tend to sit.

How to Trade It

Because the Hangman is a confirmation, it usually improves the timing of a trade you were already preparing at the PD array. Two approaches:

Aggressive

Enter on the close of the Hangman candle, with the stop just beyond the wick’s extreme. This gives the best risk-to-reward but risks a second test of the level.

Confirmed

Wait for the displacement that follows, then enter on the retracement into the fair value gap created by that displacement. The stop still sits beyond the Hangman wick. This is the higher-probability version.

A Worked Example

Price rallies into the London session and sweeps a prior day high (buy-side liquidity). Sitting just above that high is a bearish order block from the previous down-move. Price taps into the order block and a single candle prints a long upper wick, closing back below the swept high — a textbook bearish Hangman.
The next two candles displace lower, leaving a fair value gap. You enter short on the retracement into that gap, stop above the Hangman wick, targeting the sell-side liquidity below. The wick told you the order block held; the displacement told you it was institutional.

These are related but distinct. A rejection block is a PD array defined by a cluster of wicks that you can enter from later. The Hangman is a single-candle confirmation that an array — which may itself be a rejection block, order block, or FVG — has just been respected. Think of the rejection block as the zone and the Hangman as the timestamp that says “now.”

Common Mistakes

Trading wicks in open space. A long wick is only a Hangman if it rejects from a defined PD array. Without the array, it is just a wick.
Skipping the displacement. A rejection wick with no follow-through is a warning, not a signal. If price sits at the level after the wick, institutions have not committed.
Forcing it without a sweep. The best Hangmen follow a clean liquidity sweep. No sweep usually means no institutional fill, and the rejection is less reliable.
